Question

Why does 'import' into Premiere Pro automatically launch Media Encoder?

I'm trying to import footage shot on a SonyA7111 ie normal MP4 into Premiere. As soon as I import, it starts ingesting and encoding the footage, which I don't believe should be necessary, and vastly slows down the computer. Am I doing something wrong? All help gratefully received.

Your Ingest project settings are set to transcode source footage.  Turn that off.

That said, it's always worth considering transcoding source footage to a CODEC that's good for editing and set your Sequence Video Previews to match.  I recommend Apple ProRes, but any of the CODECs that support Premiere Pro's Smart Rendering feature is a good choice.

Thank you! YesI eventually found the solution and changed the settings. I don’t really need ProRes for this project and it was massively slwing down my computer. But thank you so much for this - I will remember for the future!
