Combining "Repeat Grid" and Symbols is not possible ?

Repeat Grid has some great features:

(1) Layout changes to one item in the grid is synced to all other

(2) A set of images can be dragged into a repeat grid and XD assigns images to each item in the grid (similarly for lines in a text file)

But imagine that the same repeat grid is used in multiple artboards (screens).

So my intention is: What must I do so that I can update the layout of the grid item in one artboard and have that change synced across all artboards ?

This is what I have tried so far:

- Make the grid item into a symbol

- Do "Repeat Grid" of the symbol

Doing this however only achieves partial success as feature (2) of repeat grid I mentioned above no more works.

Is it possible to have repeat grid work as expected (i.e. both features 1,2 work) when using symbols ?
