Component tap state not changing back to default state?

Hello, I'm very new to adobe XD. In fact didn't start working on it until this morning. I'm able to pick up the product pretty quickly but I'm at a loss as to why when I'm prototyping a button and I tap on that button I expect the button to revert back to it's default state but instead if just stays in the button down state.

Can you share a screenshot or even better - a video of what you're trying to accomplish? In general, the interaction options in Xd are pretty limited. You have Tap and Hover as cursor events.

The tap can be wired to permanently switch the state of a component to a different state. The Hover - while the mouse is over the component, the state is temporarily switched, and when the cursor leaves, the state is switched back. Doesn't work on mobile, because you don't have a cursor to hover with. The "Toggle" state is similar to the hover, but requires a tap/click to switch back (click/tap and release, doesn't work with click/tap and hold).

I assume you want to simulate a holding down of the mouse / finger interaction, where you have a pressed down (active) state while clicking/tapping, and it goes back upon releasing the mouse button / finger press. There's no way to do that in Xd. You could simulate it for a split second, but the workaround is so hacky it's not worth the bother.
