Document Assets/Master Components not updating after change

I am having this issue with a few files now. We have all of our master assets - character styles, master components, etc. - laid out in the document assets panel. However, all of a sudden now when we try to update a master component, to change the character style - it won't update. Sometimes it will take the change (ie. it will take the font change) other times it simply reverts to what was initially done. We created a master component for the navigation, and when we try to update the master component, it won't change it on any of the instances. This is a HUGE deal because one of the sites we have is extremely large, with many different pages. We can't possibly be expected to go through and manually change each and every single component because the master isn't updating.
