Drag and drop images into shape not considered a true mask?

When an image is dragged directly into a shape from the browser, it seems impossible to retrieve the image from the shape to re-mask it? This really limits what could be an amazing workflow within Adobe XD, or am I missing something? In every other way it seems to function as a mask.

 

Is there a solution that avoids have to drag the image back in from the browser and resize?
