Error 55 when Updating a public link

I went to the Manage Links web page and deleted my most recently published link. I then went back to Adobe XD and attempt to "Update Link", and got the indicated Error 55.

I believe the reason this is happening is because Adobe XD provides no way of directing the publish to a particular public link. Adobe XD seems completely unaware that multiple destination links might exist. My previously published prototype which contains many comments from various people is now divorced!! I can no longer update it, which means to move forward with my prototype I have to tell those people that their comments are essentially lost.

This published prototype contains many comments, and I can no longer update it: Adobe XD CC

Please advise.

    Hi KevinMacDonald98122,

Sorry to hear about the confusion.  It sounds like you may be hitting a couple of different (and unique) issues.

    1. If you delete a prototype from the Manage Links page, you will no longer be able to update that prototype.  Deleting the prototype removes it from Creative Cloud storage, and on one will be able to access that link.  If you go back to that same prototype in the XD desktop app and attempt to update it, you will receive an error.  You can however generate a new link.  Does this sound like what happened in your case?

    2. You are correct to note that today, XD only allows the user to make updates to the last published prototype.  For example, imagine the following scenario:

    - User publishes a prototype at URL-A.

    - User published a prototype from the same file, this time selecting to generate a new URL (URL-B).

Once you save the design file, you will only be able to update URL-B.  URL-A will still exist, but you can no longer make updates to that specific URL.

The ability to update and manage multiple URLs from the same XD design file is something we are exploring internally and considering for a future release.

Does this help explain the behavior you are seeing?

Yes it does explain the behavior. I was fairly certain that was what was going on.

My reasons for wanting to update multiple links is to provide prototypes for separate audiences to comment on. For example, I have developers working on building the app, and I have academic specialists reviewing how the app functions. Their comments are very different and should be kept separate from one another. But since I can only update the most recent publish it means one audience with all of their comments gets left behind, which is too bad.

    Thanks

Definitely a valid use-case.  I'll pass this on to our XD Product Managers as input to consider when decide when/if to do this work.

In the meantime, what you can do is use "Save As" to create multiple, distinct versions of the same XD doc, and then generate a unique URL from each doc.  That way you can share that URL with just the group you want and not others.
