Hover works within path bounding box but not within the path

Hi, I've just started learning XD, I've done the following 

I create an irregular shape with the pen tool.

I convert to a component.

I add a hover state

The hover state gets triggered when I move cursor within the paths bounding box and not within the path itself, why is this so, any help would be greatly appreciated.
