Question

How can I connect the assets on my design file to the new XD library, I created from my style guide?

I’m a little bit nervous about the announcement, that adobe XD components will only link to libraries from September on.

I’m working with a big style guide, as an extra XD file, where I am used to do my central changes on elements. All important elements in my design (work) document(s) are connected to my style guide.

Following the instructions to create a library from my style guide, I saved all my master elements within a library. I also connected my work file(s) to the new library.

But all the components on my work file are still connected to my style guide.

For testing purpose, I deleted my style guide file. All connections to my work document are now missing.

Shouldn’t there be a possibility to connect those to the new library?!? There is only an option to connect them with a file.

I’m really really anxious that in September all my original connections to my work file will be lost and that I can’t sync components with my library, because they are not connecting.

Saving all elements of my work file as lokal isn’t really an option for me, because I need the connection to other files – via the library. I mean, that’s the task of a library, isn’t it?

If you could give me some advice, I really would be greatful 😉

    Hi There,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your sentiments around this change. We understand your concern here.
We are migrating to this workflow to give more control to the users over the Design System.

When the design system grows, and the complexity of the projects increases as well. This change is going to provide robust support and centralization to enhance the experience. Other than the components, a Design System is consists of colors, character styles, and other assets that you may use in apps like Photoshop and Illustrator.

You are going to unlock tons of capabilities after this migration. Here's a list of features that Libraries will support, and for more info, see this: https://helpx.adobe.com/xd/help/migrate-design-systems-to-creative-cloud-libraries.html

I have this same concern and was hoping to find an answer to the question that was posed:

In other words, why does the "work file" that is referencing the library now have 2 sets of assests - the original file that served as the design system, and the newly published library? And it is using the assets from the original file, NOT the library. Do we have to replace every component in the work file with the exact same component from the library?

When saving library docs using Save As, the Components keep the same internal ids, so that's why they still reference the old library. Try the following:

Open copied file in XD, select all Components that you want in new Library, and then Copy. Create a new cloud doc named what you want to call your new Library, then Paste. All of the Components should be Linked to the local file. For each Linked Component in Assets Panel, right-click > Make Local (which generates new internal ids). You should be able to multi-select to do a bunch at a time to save time. Finally, Publish new Library.

    Hope this helps,

    Randy
