How to edit character styles? The user guide steps don't work for me

Question

Hi,

How do I edit a character style? The user guide instructs you to right-click it in the Document Assets panel then click Edit in the dropdown, but I don't see "Edit" as an option. And is there any alternate way to update a style or is this the only route (such as by modifying an instance of it and pushing updates to the style)?

I'm on a Mac, using Control key + click to replicate right click.

Those are from a shared library (notice the link icon), which would normally mean you'd want to edit the shared library if you want all files which use that shared library to all get the same updates.

If you want the change to only apply to the current file, making it local breaks the link to the shared library so it only affects that current file (and therefore you can edit it in the file).

Update: Selecting "Make local component" from the dropdown makes the Edit option appear.  Can anyone explain what this function does?
