How to resize a linked symbol responsively

I have 2 files right now. One is named assets and it contains various reusable elements, for example icons, header, footer etc

Another file is named "homepage" and includes copy, pasted header, footer as linked symbols (from assets file). My issue is that I can't resize linked symbols without breaking the links. Can I do it somehow?

The only workaround is to ungroup and then to resize but I loose the links then. I want to be able to change all shareable elements from one place (assets.xd file).

I could also make my footer, header the right width in assets file but I will face the same issue when I need to start designing home page for other devices like mobile, tablet etc.
