Imported text from Illustrator to XD is broken

Hi there!   

I'm a newbie to XD.  I imported an .ai file and XD broke the text boxes into tiny segments. 

For instance:  Happy St. Paddys imported as:

H APP Y ST P AD  DYS D   AY. 

Each group of text is in it's own text box and the spacing is off. It's a nightmare to edit my large doc.  Please help. 😱
