Stroked on masked object not working

When masking a image in a shape it use to make borders around the shape like I always do now suddenly its making the border on the image it doesn't matter that I only click on the shape it still gives the border on the image.

If I understood correctly, when you mask an image with a shape (like a rectangle), and try to apply a border, now the border appears on the image itself instead of the shape, even though you're clicking only on the shape. Is that right?

Yes that is correct. I even tried creating a new file but it didn't work.
