Text editing not showing changes to leading

I have a text box and want to reduce the leading.

So I adjust it and it does something while text box has focus...

but then does this when the text box loses focus...

Why? And how do I fix it?

I just realized that a lot of my text shifts around on focus. Spaces before line breaks appear and disappear.
