Question

Xd "magicaly" converts shapes into paths? This destroys my design system!

Hi Adobe,

I had notice a strange fact: sometimes Xd automaticaly transforms shapes into paths! Is their a way to reverse this?

I have a background shape as component layered at the very back of all my other dresign system components, so when a customer of mine wants an other shadow, wants rounded corners oder background color, I can immediately change it by just changing one component. Now this component (a shape) magicaly turned into a path so i can no longer ajust corners an so on.... this absolutly destroys all my work.

How can I change it back to a shape?

Xd will convert shapes into paths if you go into "path edit mode" (pressing enter while the shape is selected, or double clicking on a shape) and edit something about the shape - change color, resize, move or add anchor points.

You can tell you are in this "mode" if the anchor points become visible. If you select something else on the artboard or press Esc without editing anything about the shape while in this edit mode, the shape will stay a shape. If you touch anything on it, it will become a path, and this is irreversible unless you are still in the session and can Undo it with Ctrl+Z.

You may have accidentally gone into the path edit mode and changed the color for example, which has converted the shape to a path. The only way to reverse it now is to make a new shape with the same properties and replace it.

    Hey Spas,

    thanks for your answer.

"...and this is irreversible unless you are still" - this is a big problem for me and, as I noticed so far, for many others as well.

"The only way to reverse it now is to make a new shape with the same properties and replace it." - this istnt an option if you have to replace a component layered in an other component with linkes.

    Anyways, thanks for your help.

Not sure what your case is specifically, it shouldn't be an issue swapping the said shape, and it should update everywhere it's used. Provided anything doesn't break with components, which are quite fragile themselves 🙂

But yeah, it's a bad design on Adobe's part. I think in Photoshop it gave a warning when the same thing happenes with primitives & shapes, and it only happens if you move anchor points, not with other edits.
