I'm thinking about starting to learn how to use Adobe XD, but before I invest the time, I want to know how one goes about turning a prototype website into a live, functioning website that I can reach from an internet browser. Clarity on this would be very helpful!

There is a plugin to assist in that transfer. However, your milage many vary as to how well it does it job. XD allows you create and test your designs. Then it allows you or the developer to extract the assets, CSS parts that can then be applied. Honestly, it is still standard web development workflows, but with the added ease of being able to inspect and extract what you need to code your site.
