Question

AIR 30 incompatible with Windows XP

I just tested AIR 29.0 vs AIR 30.0 captiva runtime on Windows XP.

AIR 29.0 works and AIR 30.0 (not compiled as 64 bits) gave me the following error message: "... is not a valid Win32 application".

I know that Windows XP is dated and there is no more support from Microsoft, however there is a lot of Windows XP machines out there.

It's not the end of the world because my updater mechanism was prepared for this.

I can provide a x86 version with AIR 29 as final (the very last one) and AIR 30 for x64.

Except AIR 29 is not supposed to works with Windows XP

Last AIR SDK to support Windows XP officially was AIR 15 released 2014-09-09

Adobe AIR Tech specs archive from 2014-09-09

since AIR 16 released 2015-01-13 Windows XP was not anymore in the minimum system requirements

Microsoft themselves have stopped support for Windows XP since 8 April 2014

Personally I apply a very simple logic, if the main vendor of an operating system does not support it

I (as a much much much smaller software vendor) can not support it either.

Even if AIR 29 does work under Windows XP, it's a a battle I would not even try to fight.

R: Yes, I know but works

R: Yes, I know that it's not officially supported but works for me.

R: Yes, the planet knows (except some folks that insists using Windows XP).

R: Good point.

Even if AIR 29 does work under Windows XP, it's a a battle I would not even try to fight.

R: Unfortunately there are many companies with old machines with Windows XP (more than with macOS system !).

For my application, I don't support officially Windows XP but works with it (the same as AIR 29).

I prepared my AIR updater for this and works.

For now, the system will use automatically AIR 29 for 32 bits systems and AIR 30 (or newer) for 64 bits systems.

If in a near future it's not viable anymore for my application or Windows XP marketplace reduce significantly, I will then discontinue AIR 29, so Windows XP.

It's not a major issue at all.
