have tried playing with all settings and publish cache but I can't narrow down what exactly is causing flash cs6 to suddenly decide to add 10 mb to the size of the air apk file size

You can open the APK with ZIP/RAR and check what files are different in their size or additionally packed, which are not there in the 100 KB APK.

I would assume, that the AIR runtime is packed in the 10 MB file (captive runtime bundling).

Thanks, just created two identical apk's one is 10mb, one is 86k and the swf is 33k

looking at them the difference is in the lib directories - one of them has a libcore.so of 10mb and the other just has libNativeABI but both were published to same air 16 android settings with captive runtimes.

Addendum - although it says packaged with captive run times, the are not so the small one needs air installed first and the large should just work - and it does.

so the problem seems to be that the captive runtime - which is 10mb. and that the publish settings reset and even though the publish SAYS that captive runtime is there it isn't. OK solved I think
