Fire DJ has been released for the Kindle Fire using the latest AIR 3.3b for the audio updates.  The app was at #1 for new releases in Entertainment for a few hours, is #2 at time of posting (http://www.amazon.com/gp/new-releases/mobile-apps/2478843011).

First off, thank you all for the help and clarifications regarding the AIR 3.3b.  This has been a great learning experience for me from a number of different angles.  I've been a client-based AS2/AS3 developer for over a decade, but this is the first time I've taken a step out on my own into the app space, and into AIR development.  Like anything new, it's been sprinkled with a little fear and a little anxiety.  In certain cases its even brought a little disappointment, but in general, a great learning experience.

In regards to the improvements that I perceive in the latest update, it could possibly be the way I'm consuming the audio data, but it seems a bit snappier in general.  Perhaps it's just a psychological hose job on my end, but the app seems to have less "jitters" when loading a new track, which rarely happens, but is annoying when it does.  The GPU scaling issues seem to have been (mostly) resolved as well, though there is a little delay in updating the screen the first time the app is initiated.  I don't have any hard evidence, just playing/testing the app very rigorously.  If there are even further improvements possible in the audio category, that's great news for the future.

The app was aimed at the consumer level right from the start, as it was developed and tested using 3.2 initially, so I wasn't under any significant pressure regarding the slight audio delay.  I'm not a DJ, and I understand that in a professional setting any delay is frowned upon, but I am a musician, and from a "play the music" and have fun perspective, it works just fine in my opinion (as well as other testers).  This is also reflected in the pricing decision.

All in all I had a lot of factors working against me.  And though I am very grateful for the units sold so far, I found it interesting that what you see from the outside (Top Sellers, etc) on the Amazon charts, is clearly not any indicator of what is actually happening behind the scenes.  I've certainly got my work cut out for me, and I think the only way to bring in a reasonable (livable) income, is having a stable of generally good performing apps that contribute to a monthly total.  I'm probably stating the obvious, but again, I'm fresh in the game.

If anyone is interested in how the app performed, both from a sales perspective, and in relation to its chart positions over the weekend, I would be more than willing to share that experience if it's something that could be helpful.  The app was solely released on the Kindle Fire, so that plays a huge factor in the results, but I would love to give something back for the help you all have given me.

Anyhow, everyone have a great week, and thank you for all the help, and even stress-relief at times.  It's much appreciated.

Best,

...and yes, I still love AIR.

Please tell me the latest version of air fixes the sound lag issue on the KF and the NOOK? I am guessing it does cause a DJ app with a 1 second delay would be useless.

I recall in the notes from adobe for AIR 3.2 the RC was ok to be used for public release, so I dont see why 3.3 would change anything.

Here is the direct quote from the 3.3 SDK download site.

The following downloads provide the AIR 3.3 SDK beta archives for Mac and Windows operating systems. With this beta of the AIR SDK, you are now allowed to distribute and test captive runtime versions of your AIR applications so you can publish immediately to marketplaces, such as the iOS App Store, the Android Market and the Amazon Appstore. We recommend you update your applications with the GM build when it is available.

You are fine, stop worrying, I know that sick to your stomach feeling and it sucks.

Neither the recent Kindle Fire OS patch, nor the AIR 3.2, help the audio latency problem. The bug I logged in February is still in the Adobe system, but is listed as being a duplicate of another bug. I don't know the status of the one it is a duplicate of.

Yep that's a change. As of 3.2 with Stage3D being the big anticipation that paragraph clearly read you could not use a beta for a marketplace. They changed the beta terms for 3.3. Must not be a huge update, at least nearly as much as 3.2 was with Stage3D.

While I'm glad to see a beta is now allowable, you really should be weary on one thing. While a Release Candidate (RC) generally presumes the interfaces and features are complete as well as most of the bug list cleared, there is still a chance an implementation or feature can change, be added or subtracted based upon mass feedback. Once the RC comes out you can feel confident at that point, sans apocolypse, the interfaces and features are locked down tight. Just keep on your toes for the RC, recompile and if you get no bugs just hold out for the full release. Then update to the full release, hope again for no bugs and then submit an app update.

3.3 beta or release candidate? You know the Adobe EULA stipulates you may not produce an app using a beta, right?

Thank you for bringing this to my attention.  It's being looked into right now.  Do you know how or where I can contact someone from the AIR team?  I am having no luck finding that information on the adobe.com site.

I certainly wasnt trying to cause any problems, and may have gotten a little over-excited.  I would like to resolve this ASAP.  I think the app speaks a lot as to what AIR can do on a Kindle Fire, but I want to make sure I am moving forward properly.  Some of this is new territory for me as a single developer.

Thanks in advance.

I posted a message where the right people will see it. Hopefully they will just not worry about it, and have you update the app when 3.3 is released.
