Downside of selling .apk?

Apologies if this question sounds stupid... I am more familiar with design and am slowly learning technical/development side.

I have developed a simple game for Android. Instead of uploading it on the Android Market, I would like to distribute via my own website.

I've been doing some research around the web and people seem to think doing this has some major drawbacks, but I haven't seen anything

that's very clear on what those drawbacks are. Can anyone tell me why uploading on the market would be preferable to offering downloads on your own site?

I would suggest uploading the Amazon market if you do go the major app store route, they have a review process and far fewer apps so you are more likely to get discovered and you are not surrounded by junk. I have the same app on both and I have sold 20X more apps on Amazon than on Android Market.

Another downside to self distribution is you have no credibility compared to an established website, let them do the work, sure they take 30% but consider that your marketing budget.

when average joe goes to install it they might also be scared off from the message

"to enable installation of non-market apps, go to settings..."

Average Joe wouldn't be able to find or download your app, and certainly not install it.

You only have to touch the link to an apk, and the downloading and installing is easy.

Yeah but average joe is dumber than you might think : )

Anyway, the biggest reason to use the market is exposure I guess. There's no way you would get more sales by doing your own advertisement and hosting (+ you have to put in extra work setting up your own 'mini-store' and hosting). The app-store/market is there for a reason...

The only reason I could thinkg of for putting up your own hosted apk files is for corporate in-house apps that aren't meant to go public.
