How are people signing their Android Apps for Google Play?

What is common practice for signing Android Apps, is self signing acceptable? If not, what certificate authorities are popular for Adobe AIR Apps?

All the apps I've submitted to Android app stores (Google, Amazon, and Samsung) have been with self signed certificates.

Does it not come up with UNKNOWN publisher?

No, because you enter your publisher details in the certificate. As far as I can tell the user just has the one dialog where they have to give permissions.
