Question

Invoke AIR app from browser without flashplayer

We have implemented an AIR application which we launch via button click in an Flash/Flex app. This Flex app only consists of this start button. Now our customer complains that his users need to install Flash in order to start the app. Is there any other possibility to invoke/start the local AIR app from a browser? I'm talking about a desktop app not a mobile app.

I don't think so. No offense to your client, but it's kind of a silly complaint. Flash Player is still ubiquitous on desktop, and you could simply not require it and users would need to launch the application themself, like they would have to do with any other app. The Flash Player feature is a value add, not a value take away.

Cheers.

Has any progress made on this issue?

Now Flash is nearing its End of Life, the question seems very legit.

I am moving my RIAs from Flash in browser to Air. So far so good, but I would like to be able for the user to invoke the app from his browser. So I could just use the same login page URL and redirect to the app.

Without using a swf file for the invocation, of course.

It's still over two years before the Flash Player plugin support will end, but in the meantime there are protocols that can be used. I haven't had to do those yet, but articles like this one seem to cover it:
