linking to app on markets

hi,

on iOS i read it's best to link to apps from the url

"itms-apps://itunes.apple.com .... app link"

seems to work, goes right to market..good.

on android i see this launches direct to market rather than asking the use if they should use the browser or market

"market://details?id= ... app link"

BUT! because of the different devices and markets, you don't know where it may end up on android... amazon market for example. So is it best to just use a normal url?

although now that i think of it, if the user has a kindle fire and managed to root it and download the normal android market version, then perhaps the market:// url would work ok for that person.

It just seems with all the devices and markets and black markets you may run the risk of the link going nowhere for some people.

ok rethinking this...

normal android = all set

i would provide an alternate link for the amazon market place version = all set

if a rooted kindle fire gets access to the android market version, it still might work as normal.

if it didnt, the normal url link might not work for that person anyway because as is, the kindle will not even allow you to see the android market website (shame on amazon!)

so the only problem would be other devices with no normal android market in the first place, like the viewsonic Gtab which runs air well, but has no default access to normal markets... for them the url would be kind of nice becuase they can at least see the full version on the website.

How would the person, with no access to any market, have installed your app in the first place?

As for others, just provide each of the links that have your app. Someone who has both Amazon Appstore and Google Marketplace, can choose for themselves which one to go to.

A person with no access to the market would most likely have downloaded it with a "fix" for their device to get access to the android market. Then i question if the "market://details?id= ... app link" would work for them. A normal web url seems like it might be a better choice...every device should be able to see that link and choose to use market app or browser.  (except kindle version which will have its own link)

but it sure is nice to press one button and be at the market download link
