Is there any way to get this to work with adobe air on ios?

apple are telling me I need to use it within my app instead of directing the user to a web page

That's what StageWebView does. If you're on a recent version of AIR it will be using the same web kit view that Safari uses.

The more recent web view has some security differences, but you could start with using it in the standard way, and come back with questions about what parts don't work.
