Question

Submit APK for BlackBerry??

Have you guys heard about the promo RIM is running to attract android developers?

https://twitter.com/#!/asaunders/status/165097598624075777

Anyway they have an online submission process that converts your .apk file to their .something file and so far I put one of my apps through it and it passed initial testing, I am still waiting on signing certificates to get it full submitted but I see one user is experiencing problems with it due to lack of an AIR plugin on the device.

See link for problem.

http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Plug-in-for-Android/Porting-from-Flash-to-Android-to-Playbook-possible/td-p/1558193

So my question is has anyone tried successfully submitting a Captive Runtime AIR app to the Android for BlackBerry program?

Does the playbook have an air plug in? If so what version of air does it support, both the apps I plan on submitting exist in a 2.6 version and above.

Well, I can confirm that it's possible to sign and submit an app to the Blackberry World succesfully.

I just had my app approved and it's live at the store right now (http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/content/87212/?lang=en)

I developed my app in Flash CS5.5 Professional and published an SWF-file with AIR3.1 settings. Then I just followed the steps desribed here: http://www.hsharma.com/tutorials/10-easy-steps-to-package-and-sign-air -apps-for-playbook/ and everything went fine!

I did NOT use any native extensions or captive runtime. Just a plain SWF file.

The great thing is that I am now eligable for the free Playbook Offer so I can port more of my existing apps and test them on a real device!

So Flash developers out there: know that this is surely possible!

Sorry for the delay.

No, I have not submitted any apps to RIM at all.

I did buy a playbook recently and I have tested on it, it's a nice device and render performance is great + no audio delay.

You are talking about apps for the playbook only right? (I am not familiar with other black berry products or if they have Air... I assume they do not)

The playbook has Air pre-installed, the latest playbook OS is showing Air 3.1.0.21

They do not allow you to submit an air app with captive runtime because of this. (A Flash builder popup told me so!)

I was curious if the .apk conversion was a work around to get a captive runtime app on... not that you would really want to anyway though.

WOW 2 weeks!!!

Hey boat, so you've tried a captive runtime app submission through the online tool?

https://bdsc.webapps.blackberry.com/android/bpaa/

I am talking playbook I suppose, I am not familiar with all their products.

I am coming out of flash cs5.5

Mark, you submitted your app with captive runtime to the BB market via the apk converter thing? did it get accepted?

February 25, 2012

Boat my app did not have the captive runtime plug in, it requires the AIR plug in, it passed the initial online submission and then I got an email from BB saying I qualified for the free Playbook promotion pending my app getting approved and it has been in waiting for review mode for the last 2 weeks, not sure if its stuck there forever or they are overwhelmed with submissions. I am basically waiting to get rejected for needing the AIR plug in and then I will either resubmit a captive runtime version (if I can figure out how to make one) or follow Topo's link for proper BB submission.

Actually, it's pretty easy to submit your flash app to the Blackberry Appstore for Playbook. That is: once you know how to do it. ;-)

I have been reading through Blackberry's tutorials and didn't really understand all the steps that are neccessary for submission. Until I came along this blogpost, which explained very clearly how it's done.

http://www.hsharma.com/tutorials/10-easy-steps-to-package-and-sign-air-apps-for-playbook/

I registered as a developer and submitted my flash-app 3 days ago. I don't use Flashbuilder or any other eclipse-like tool. My app was created and compiled as an swf in Flash Professional 5.5 with the Air 3.1 overlay.

I really hope that my app will be accepted and that other developers can start developing for Playbook to. Just follow the steps above and it will be a breeze.

Actually: I just found out that the free Playbook Promo offer is extended until march 3rd. And it's not just about Android anymore: if you submit a new app (could be an air-app) you are eligible for a free Playbook.

Thanks for the link Topo, I will have to look into that if this method doesn't work, which I fully expect not to.

I think the author is being very liberal with the word easy, but it looks very clear and well documented.

BTW so far the app has passed the online submission and I have received a confirmation from BB that I qualify for the free playbook if the app gets accepted but even if it doesn't I qualify once I can get it passed the approval process so I can take Topo's method above and resubmit.

I have been avoiding BB for some reason but after my pleasant experience with the NOOK I think I am missing an opportunity, how are sales on the BB App World?

They still seem to be biased towards Flash Builder (or Eclipse anyway), so I gave up hope of there being a way for one of us Flash users to enter a contest, and bought a Playbook for myself. I managed to build tests onto it from Flash Builder 4.6, but didn't yet fight my way through command line ways to build a Flash swf to it. I may try the FB ActionScript wrapper way one of these days.

As it happens, the apps I have that I might try on an online converter tool are not going to be finished by Wednesday, so I'll pass on that for now, and continue to hope for Flash support one day.

Colin can you report back if your RunTime app gets accepted throught he online submitter? I am very intersted in building BlackBerry apps.
