Upgrade to AIR3.6 from older AIR-versions still not allowed by Apple?

Hi,

I was wondering if any of you guys know if Apple allow updating an app to the latest AIR-version if the original app was created with an early version of AIR (2.1).

As I remember correctly: Apple didn't allow updating an app if that means that older devices aren't supported anymore. Not sure if that is still the case, as Apple's own OS doesn't support these older devices (such as the iPod touch 3rd generation).

The problem I'm facing is as follows:

- I created an app with Air 2.1 which has been in the Appstore for almost 2 years now. It supports all those older devices that were hot back then.

- I'm very eager to upgrade this app to starling with AIR3.6, because of performance reasons.

- Last time I checked Apple didn't allow updates that drop support for older devices. Don't know if that is still the case.

- Making it a complete new app instead of an upgrade is no solution for me, I just don't want to force my existing users to pay again for my updated app.

How are you guys dealing with this?

Is it possible to upgrade my app and drop support for older devices?

Should I create a new 'version 2' app?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this subject.

I don't think you will have an issue. I dropped support for iPad 1 on an app and didn't have an issue.

Requiring iOS 6 is an easy way to drop support for iPad 1, but going from AIR 2.1 to AIR 3.6 may be more awkward, because that involves dropping ArmV6 support, and Apple might be more bothered by that.

One work around to the issue of having original buyers not having to pay again would be to do an AIR 2.1 update to promote the new app, and its release date, then make the new version be free for the first few days.

Colin took the words out of my mouth, I was going to suggest the same thing, update the current app with air 2.1 and put a big pop up on launch that tells customers that march 5th - 10th the new app is launching and they can get it for free after that its whatever price. Also at the same time submit the new version to apple and set it to "hold for developer release" so that you can actually control the release date of the new app. But first option would be to try to simply update the old app with 3.6 and see what happens, maybe apple accepts it and all your worries are gone.
