VerifyError when compiling for Flash rather than for Flex

Valid code works fine in

a) debug mode for Flex

b) debug mode for ActionScript

c) release mode for Flex

But crashes 100% of the time in release mode for ActionScript.

Presumably a compiler difference, but is a fundamental blocker to our rolling out required functionality.
