Adobe Animate Bundled Oracle Java 17 – Licensing Risk for Enterprise Users

Hi everyone,
I have a question regarding the Java runtime bundled with Adobe Animate.

On all of my company’s machines, Adobe Animate installs its own Java Runtime Environment inside the application folder (e.g., *C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Animate 2024\jre*) and it appears to be Oracle Java 17. This has been confirmed by checking the internal JRE folder and by community reports indicating that Animate 2024 ships with a Java 17 runtime.
Older versions reportedly included Oracle Java 11 as well.

Because Oracle Java SE 17 requires a commercial license under Oracle’s current employee‑based licensing model, this represents a potential compliance and financial risk for companies that deploy Adobe Animate.

I would like clarification from Adobe regarding the following:

  1. Does Adobe Animate officially distribute Oracle Java 17, and is it licensed for use by end customers under Adobe’s agreement with Oracle?
  2. Is the bundled JRE covered by Adobe’s licensing so that customers do not need a separate Oracle Java SE subscription?
  3. Is it possible to replace the bundled JRE with a compatible OpenJDK distribution without breaking Animate’s functionality?
  4. Does Adobe plan to switch to OpenJDK in future releases to avoid these licensing issues for enterprise deployments?

This is a critical compliance question for our company and likely for many others.
Any official clarification from Adobe staff would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

there’s no longer support (beyone security fixes) for animate, but this should be posted in your admin console.
