Animate: Crashing when Opening/Creating Files

I held off from upgrading from Adobe Flash CS6 (probably the most stable version of Flash/Animate in the decade and half I been an Adobe software user. Keyframe Caddy randomlg stopped working in CS6 (I assume a Cloudkid server or something was shut down?) and it's necessary part of my pipeline. So I was forced to upgrade to the current Animate and pay for the current version of Keyframe Caddy. Fine.

There's stuff that annoys me like the "Make Default" button in document settings not actually doing anything as the 'default settings' keep factory resetting every time I open the program. Fine, annoying, but not a deal breaker. Just an extra 30 seconds to change settings each day.

I downloaded the Keyframe Caddy Trial to make sure Keyframe Caddy worked, it did. So I purchase it and try to uninstall the trial, which has been "uninstalling" for 3 months.

After about 2 weeks of use, the program would stop opening files. I can open Animate, but if I try to create a new file or open an older one it's just crashes, without an error messages. Just does the fade into the desktop, like that Simpsons meme of Homer going into the bushes.

Okay, so I uninstalled and reinstall the program, which seems to be the only advice I can find with people having similar issues. It temporarily fixes it, but after a few days or a week the same thing happens. So I uninstall the latest update, not uncommon for a new version to have bugs. So I install an immediate older version of Animate. Same thing again!

I'm gonna be honest, requiring users to reinstall the program every few days, having to manually reinstall/apply the plug-ins and settings is extremely frustrating. And my partner is trying to convince me to move to ToonBoom because this is effecting my productivity and business, and she's hurting seeing my frustrating daily. I am sorry if my tone seems cynical, but I've been sucking it up for a couple of months now, trying to fine solution online, only to find the same one (which didn't work for others) as the only solution. Just reinstall.

This is literally a last ditch effort to not have to learn a new more expensive program. Please, someone 🙏

Adobe added their own version of keyframe caddy back in Animate 2015. It's called the "Frame Picker" and it works pretty much the same way. Give it a try: https://youtu.be/mh1gD9fYWpg?t=470

Regarding the issue, it may be a firewall / anti-virus problem which could explain the crashes and why keyframe caddy stopped working. If it's configured to block connections that Animate needs, it can cause the program to crash or freeze. For example, Animate may need to connect to Adobe’s servers to check for updates or authenticate the software. It could also happen if you are working with a file that is stored on a network drive, and the firewall is blocking the connection to that drive, you will not be able to access the file, causing Animate to freeze.

Check these settings and make sure your firewall / anti-virus isn't blocking these connections, if you're unsure, then setting them to their default configurations usually does the trick, if not contact their respective customer support.

Just keep using CS6 powered by EDAP Tools.

Smart Graphic Control is way more functional than the abandoned Caddy.

Nick's EDAP Tools is a really cool rigging tool. I highly recommend it.

if @n. tilcheff's solution works for you, do that.

otherwise, uninstall your problematic animate versions including preferences per https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/uninstall-remove-app.html

then reinstall one of the versions and test.
