Animate extremely slow

I'm trying to animate for a project but animate is extremely slow, every time I do anything like selecting a frame or copying it it freezes and goes "not responding" for around 15-30 secs if not minutes, I'm using the latest version of animate, my computer has 16 gb of ram and and running no other applications. It slows my work to a grinding halt, something that should've taken me minutes has now taken me 8 hours.
