Animate Tools do not work

When I try to do simple tasks in Animate (draw a text box, draw a shape, etc...) nothing shows up on the screen.  The only time I can see things I've added to a layer is if I go to exit the page without saving and they briefly flash on the blank workspace before the whole page closes.  What am I doing wrong?  Is there a view / setting I need to adjust??
