Apply overlay to the layer directly beneath ONLY?

I'm trying create highlights on my character by painting with white or black and using overlay blending mode. Is there a way to have the overlay affect only the layer directly beneath and none of the others? Thank you!

    Correct answer Nick Gioia

Instead of using overlay blend mode what I usually do is take a color and bring down the opacity on it and then just painted my highlights.

But if that's what you wanna do here's a tutorial that I show you how to use blend modes to make highlights. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0o7lGqqANM8

    Hi.

Maybe you'll need to place the layers in question in a separate symbol. One quick way of doing this is by selecting both layers, right-clicking and choosing Convert Layers to Symbol.
