Auto lip sync always late

Lately, in the last few projects I've used it, automatic lip syncing has been off by about 6 frames - for some reason it seems to add neutral frames at the start making all the following syncing lag. If I slide off the frames back, the syncing is correct. I've used auto lip sync pretty extensively since it was introduced and never had this issue before. Anyone else experienced this or know some reason it might be happening? A bug with 22.0.7? Or something about how the audio is set up that needs to change for this version to work properly?
