Auto recover size limit?

I might work with a few files open. One or two small reference FLAs and a big scene with all my animation.

I have auto recover set to ten minutes.

When Flash inevitably crashes, it recovers the small reference files, but of course, not the big animation.

I lose like a half hour's work.

Why?

I've often had multiple several hundred megabyte FLAs open at the same time, and they all seem to get recovered.

The dialog that appears may not be big enough to list all the files. If you choose to have it open the recovery files, even if you don't need the first ones, does the big FLA recovery file open then? Failing that, do you see the recovery file next to the original on your hard drive? If you do you could manually open it, and if it seems ok do a Save As to replace the original FLA.

The rare instance I do get asked to recover a file, it's never the big one I was working on at the time of the crash. It's selective of the files it chooses to back up.

No, I don't see a recover file on my drive.

Yes, recover is turned on.

If you're given any file to open after a crash you should open it, even if it's not one that you're interested in. All other files that were open at the time of the crash, that had changes to them since they were last saved, will be opened too. If a file you were expecting to open doesn't get opened, then that should mean that the original file had been saved after the latest changes.

Which version of Flash Pro are you using? The whole auto recovery system was significantly improved a few versions ago.
