Bones tool making invisible bones

Everything was working fine, I'm an old hand at the bones tool and was not particularly pushing it to the limits by any means when I went to make new rig and the bones were not visible. They were there but I had no way of seeing them and therefore it became impossible to isolate a particular bone to select it.  My senes is that it's some kind of bug. ANy other reports of such a thing going on?
