Break a part not working?

Hello,
Complete Animate virgin here.
I have drawn my own character that i wish to do some basic animation with.

I am following this tutorial

When i import my character (PNG no colour or background just line work of character) and choose break a part it seems to highlight the whole square (picture attached) instead of the individual line work which makes me think thats where my problem is because i follow the tutorial to a tee and its shambles. Im assuming im doing something real ignorant because the only difference i can see from the tutorial is that he is importing a character he has mad through capture.
