Can't see background when animating symbol

So at first when I double clicked a symbol it would dull out the background and allow me to work on the symbol WHILE seeing the background.  Now for whatever reason when I double click a symbol the background disappears and all I see is the symbol.  How do I get back to being able to see he background while animating a symbol?
