Your best bet is likely to start thinking about the different aspects of the game that you need to realize and then approach each one separately to get an idea of what you are dealing with.  Then you will be able to ask more specific questions about the aspects that are giving you trouble.  When you have a better idea of the pieces you need to create and how to create them you can start thinking about if/how they need to tie together into the game.
