check existence of external large file

is there a way to check if a large file without using the '.load' function. Suppose if the file was 800MB, i wouldn't want to wait 30 minutes or so just to know that a file existence.

Couple ways - PHP has a file_exists() function. Or you could use
MovieClipLoader and call unloadClip as soon as onLoadProgress, or even
onLoadStart fires.
