Clicktags and adservers and flashtalking oh my!

I need help. I keep googling and finding tutorials and answers that are years or decades old. I make animated banner ads using adobe animate and HTML5 canvas. I kind of understand that there are different ad servers that have different requirements. Sometimes I don't know where the banner ad will go or how it will be tracked. Is there a general clicktag I should be using, something universal, something CURRENT, when the client cannot provide me with specific media specs? I'm desperate to understand this and cross my fingers whenever I deliver a banner that it works properly.
