I am just starting out with cms and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction to get started. I am going to be creating a site that needs to be updated on occassion and would like to do it through cms.

I highly recommend Flashblocks Flash CMS. Very easy to use.

Flash and Coldfusion is the way I do it. I've been doing it for years, creating custom control panels to update site content with Coldfusion and a mySQL database.

if you're using flash (and i assume you are or you wouldn't post here), use xml files for content management.
