combining two animation files

I've made two short animations that I want to combine into one file to export as an MP4 video.  I assume I should add a second scene to the first animation and put the second one there.  How do I do that?  When I create a second scene in the first animation and then try to open the second animation file, it just opens as scene one in its own file.  Thanks for the help.
