Thanks very much! I think I figured it out using movie clip masks... but it makes for a rather clunky timeline.

That is really nifty. It looks like a combined set of movieclip masks to me. There are some nice tutes on dynamic masks for many versions of Flash. I would try www.flashkit.com to see if you can find something similar.
