Create a mask effect by erasing part of a layer with a motion tween?

How can I use a symbol with a motion tween and then have its path erased on a 2nd layer below it to reveal a 3rd layer below that? I figured out a hard way to do it but is there an easy way? I don't understand what the erase feature does on the layer blending.
