Dialogue boxes/interacting with NPCs in Flash - PLEASE HELP

I will just put it out there that I am a complete noob at flash so sorry in advance if I don't know what you're talking about! I need to create a simple side scroller, I have a tutorial for that part of the game but I wish for the character (as they walk further through the game) to come across a NPC in their path that they will be able to interact with/dialogue boxes to appear. I cannot find anything to help me If anyone has any advice/or guides that would help me that would be amazing!!
