Does Animate automatically encrypt files that are in use?

We are a school and had a student open Animate where the app crashed and seems to have created an encryption situation on a file server (that has his home directory on it).  He then moved to a second computer and had the same issue.  Does Automate automatically encrypt working files?  Has anyone seen anything like this?  Sophos saw it as malitious ransomware.  Any ideas?
