Extract Flash Menu from Purchased Template

Here's my problem:  I downloaded a template from flashmint.com (this one:  http://www.flashmint.com/show-template-2320.html) and realized I was in way over my head.  All I wanted to do was use the animated menu/navigation, but it turns out this template uses GAIA (which includes XML, .js, and a whole host of .as files that are beyond what my brain can understand).  I can't begin to describe the folders and files that were included with this template ZIP file, but I have basically narrowed down the fact that a host of ".as" files make the menu work.

My question is this: Can anyone out there point me to a guide to working with .as files?  I cannot figure out where in the dozen .fla files that were included with this template where they reference the .as files (I don't know the proper lingo, but I'm guessing they are somehow tied to symbols, components, referenced in keyframe actionscript, etc.).  As you can probably tell, I am clueless about this but all I want to get a grasp on is how .as integrate with a .fla file (and ultimately a .swf file).

If you have any suggestions on where I can learn more about this, I'd be grateful.  I can't hire a developer on this project, so I'm either hoping to figure it out via this forum or I'll throw in the towel and look elsewhere for an easier menu component.
