Gift file adding to Animate

When I add a single static gif file to Adobe Animate, it shows it on the screen, but doesn't really add it.  When I go to erase part of it, it will erase that part, but when I stop, the erased part reappears.  So there's something I must do first to make that single static gif file, an actual part of the Animate fla file?
