How to have color slowly transition in moving frames

This is a bit hard to explain but here it goes, I want the color of my character to change over the course of the animation as they are moving. I was able to accomplish a simillar thing with my still background (light blue > dark blue) by using a shape tween but when the postion of the character is different between frames it causes the colors to move about and reshape themselves to the next pose rather than simply changing color. Is there anyway to achieve this effect in animate?
