most of sketch disappears when i try to make it an symbol (vid included)

So i was making a few background symbols for a video, and when I drew a bartender and then tried to form a symbol out of the sketch (like I do with all my symbols. ) but when i converted it to a symbol most of it just dissapeard. I then tried selecting the sketch and moving it, but as soon as I deselect it it dissapears as well. 

I tried using the brush tool to make a new symbol and it works just fine. What have I done wrong here?
