My selection tool always highlights everything

Hello, as the title states my selection tool will always highlight drawings in a number of blue squares, this wasn't always the case, just a couple hours ago it would only select the part of the drawing I wanted and without the square. I did notice when I used Ctrl+B it would go back to the old way but it doesn't stay that way. Is there some way I can set the old way as a preset? Thanks.
